One of those new readers here. I agree that we're barely understanding what's unfolding at a rapid pace. The observation that we are both: a) so personally engaged in online environments and b) experience a lack of control relative to these environments (what we see, what happens next, etc) seems so important.
great read, the part that stood out to me: "You're now associating with this broad online world that calls itself a “community,” but it isn't really one. For instance, you can frequently scroll on, I don’t know, “home cooking” TikTok and believe you are part of a community of amateur chefs. In reality, you don’t know anything substantial about the other members, nor do you have any proximity to them and their lives." reminds me of an article written in 2020 about the intentionality of this 'neighborhood' approach to Tiktok's algo eugenewei.com/blog/2020/8/3/tiktok-and-the-sorting-hat
Fascinated by the notion of trying to build up spaces and integrate into existing structures positive notions of mutualism and intra-group reliance. It was great to hear about how veterans are more likely to be recipients of this. I'm curious now what other spaces and structures are providing these types of values to men.
Thanks for the interview, Sam! Great conversation, as always.
What a great conversation. Another great newsletter!

Thanks for what you're both doing.
So good, as ever
The crossover episode I've been waiting for
